They are called gwragedd annwn (если я правильно помню, то читается как гурагед аннун), wives of the underworld, spirits of the water who take mortal men as their husbands.
Act One: Owena
When the Queen, Meredith, is sick and dying, the king, Griffith, calls for the enchantress in the lake. So comes Owena (Eva Green), mistress of the deep lake beside the castle, and she works her magics but the queen still dies. Griffith, depressed over the death of his wife and besotted with the enchantress, takes Owena as his lover and she gives him a daughter, Anwen. Unsatisfied with being the mistress, Owena plots against Griffith, murdering him and overthrowing him. It is only through the aid of the sorcerer, Taran, that Hywel, Griffith’s youngest son, is able to reclaim his father’s kingdom.
Act Two: Anwen
Hywel, is king and he is obsessed with Bethan, the wife of another man. When her husband dies, Hywel immediately marries her. She bares him a son, Merwyn, and there is joy throughout the kingdom. Anwen (Lena Headey), takes Taran as her lover and gives him three daughters. There is peace in the kingdom. The kingdom stretches beyond borders imagined by Griffith or his fore-bearers. Yet, sickness creeps in, Hywel one of the first to be taken. It is Taran who sees what Anwen has done and punishes her, trapping her and their daughters within the boundaries of the lake but not before Morwen (Rebecca Ferguson) escapes, Bronwen (Holliday Grainger) seduces her cousin and Ceridwen (Sophie Turner) takes her own life.
Act Three: Morwen
Merwyn rules but the kingdom is unstable. His new wife, Nerys, takes as her lover one of his most trusted knights, Caradoc, forcing him to exile one of his dearest friends. The sickness that had claimed Hywel continues to spread. Taran realizing his mistake and having no other recourse goes to seek out Morwen, knowing she is his only hope. He finds Morwen living a life quite removed from the one she left and persuades her to return to save the kingdom. The final battle pitching lake witch against lake witch.
